Shaheed Jagdish Prasad Purohit Government Degree College, Nandanagar (Ghat) was established in 2014 as a Naveen Degree College with the objective of providing accessible higher education to students of Nandanagar and the surrounding mountainous areas.

The institution was subsequently renamed Shaheed Jagdish Prasad Purohit Government Degree College in honour of Late Hawaldar Jagdish Prasad Purohit, a brave soldier of the Mahar Regiment, who hailed from the Ghat Block of Chamoli. The name of the college commemorates his service and sacrifice and serves as an enduring source of inspiration for students and the local community.
